Sincona sale 6, lot 1143

This specimen was lot 1143 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$2,707 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Louis XVI. 1774-1793. Louis d'or au buste habilleé 1774, Paris. Büste nach links. Rv. Krone über zwei Wappen und Mzz. A. Selten. Kr. Rv. Sehr schön. (France, Louis XVI, 1774-93, louis d'or au buste habillé of 1774, Paris mint. Obverse: head to left; reverse: crowned arms of France and Navarre and mintmark. Rare, adjustment marks, very fine.)"

This type was struck in limited numbers 1774-85 and was melted when the gold louis was reduced to 7.65 g in 1786. Few survive.

Specification: 8.15 g, 0.917 fine gold; this specimen is 7,56 g.
