Künker sale 264, lot 3091

This specimen was lot 3091 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,617 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖNIGREICH Louis XV, 1715-1774. Louis d'or à la vieille tête 1772, A, Paris. GOLD. RR Fast vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold louis of the old head of 1772, Paris mint. Rare, choice extremely fine.)"

This scarce type was issued 1771-74 from six mints but the vast majority of survivors are from the Paris mint. Double louis and demi-louis also exist, the demi-louis being extremely rare.

Recorded mintage: 161,542.

Specification: 8.15 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 24 mm diameter, this specimen 8.13 g.
