The first specimen was lot 74760 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Liard, 1772-A. Paris Mint. Louis XV. PCGS MS-63 Brown. No dot variety; 1st semester. From the Richard August Collection. Ex: Byron F. Johnson, Jr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, Inc. - 1/989) Lot # 3189." The specimen shown is a liard à la vieille tête minted at Paris 1768-72 at the end of the reign of Louis XV. Eleven other mints struck this type. Its face value was 3 deniers, ¼ sol or 1/480 of a silver écu. The type is common in low grade (the SCWC values it at $4 in VG) but well made specimens are scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date[2].

Specification: copper, 3.06 g, 21 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Charles Norbert Roettiers.
