This specimen was lot 70555 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Sol, 1774-BB. Strasbourg Mint. Louis XV. PCGS MS-65 Brown. A wonderfully struck example that is the finest certified by PCGS. With a rich chocolate brown patina, this Gem piece is sure to be a highlight in the next collection it enters. Sold with an original lot tag from a Coin Galleries sale. Ex: Coin Galleries (8/1985) Lot # 845." The specimen shown is a sol à la vieille tête minted at Strasbourg 1770-73 at the end of the reign of Louis XV. Eleven mints struck this type. Its face value was 12 deniers, one sol or 1/120 of a silver écu. The type is common in low grade (the SCWC values it at $3 in VG) but well made specimens are scarce.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.

Specification: copper, 12.23 g, 28-30 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by C.-N. Röettiers.
