from Sedwick Treasure Auction 21, lot 143

This specimen was lot 143 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 21 (Winter Park, FL, May 2017), where it sold for $3,818.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "France (Pau mint), double Louis d'or, Louis XV, 1757-cow, from the Auguste (1761), encapsulated NGC genuine/XF details/L'Auguste de Bordeaux. Matte texture with underlying luster (AU), nice details but with scratches on bust, very rare provenance but also a very rare issue. From the Auguste (1761), with ICCS tag #ST 029 'EF-40.'" This type was struck 1742-73 in some numbers and the Pau mint issued this type 1742-70. Many dates from Pau are common but this one is rare. It was succeeded by the double louis d'or à la vieille tête.

Recorded mintage: 8,275.

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.
