Sincona sale 83, lot 2781

This specimen was lot 2781 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 1,150 CHF (about US$1,539 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANKREICH, Louis XV. 1715-1774. 2 louis d'or au bandeau 1756, Pau. Selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Leicht justiert (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold double louis of the hair ribbon of 1756, Pau mint. Rare, Very fine-extremely fine, Minor adjustment marks)." This type was struck 1742-73 in some numbers and the Pau mint issued this type 1742-70. Many dates from Pau are common but this one is rare. It was succeeded by the double louis d'or à la vieille tête. Production was entirely dependent on the delivery of bullion to the mint and most mints operated only part time. Pau, in the Pyrenees, received a steady flow of Spanish coin.

Recorded mintage: 22,000.

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers; this specimen 16.25 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 792a, Dr/2 № 542a, Fr-463; KM 522, Gad-346a.
