France 1750-L 2 louis d'or

Künker Auction 439, lot 2066

This specimen was lot 2066 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$5,228 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH Louis XV, 1715-1774. Double louis d'or au bandeau 1750 L, Bayonne. GOLD. Winz. Kratzer und Belag auf der Rückseite, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, double louis d'or of the ribbon of 1750, Bayonne mint. Minor hairlines and planchet flaws on the reverse, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1742-73 in some numbers and the Bayonne mint is listed in the SCWC for 1742-45, 1754-58 and 1763. Other dates exist, including the 1750 shown here. It was succeeded by the double louis d'or à la vieille tête.

Recorded mintage: 1,854[2], a rare date of a fairly common type.

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers, this specimen 16,24 g.
