France 1744-G 1/2 ecu

Wm. Rosenblum sale 42, lot 212

This coin, called a demi-écu au bandeau, was the French equivalent of a half dollar. In the coinage system of the ancien régime, the half écu = three livres. The type was struck 1741-74 and is recorded for the Poitiers mint ("G") for 1741, 1744, 1746-47, 1750 and 1767. None of the dates are common. This specimen was from a recent William Rosenblum sale (Littleton, CO, February 2012) where it sold for $120.

Specification: 14.74 g, 0.917 fine silver, 31-33 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.
