This specimen was lot 99303 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $55. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XV 2 Sols (Sou Marqué) 1744-W XF Details (Environmental Damage) NGC, Lille mint. Stop after W variety. Despite ample evidence of environmental damage via straining and surface irregularities, the coin at hand displays impressive remnant detail for a piece generally seen in lesser states of preservation as the series circulated extensively throughout the French Caribbean." This coin, called a double sol aux 2 L couronnés, was an attempt by the government to displace all the low grade silver pieces circulating in France since the time of Louis XIII. It was theoretically equal to 24 deniers but was actually worth much less. Most survivors today are in poor condition. The type was struck 1738-69 and remained in circulation until its demonetisation in 1845.

Recorded mintage: 354,428, a common date[2].

Specification: 2.18 g, 0.250 fine silver, 21-22 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by J.-C. Röettiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/2 № 595, Dr/4 № 859, Gad-251, KM 500.22, Vlack-205a (R7).
