Jean Elsen sale 127, lot 1390

This specimen was lot 1390 in Jean Elsen sale 127 (Brussels, December 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AV double louis d'or au bandeau, 1744BB, Strasbourg. D/ T. à g., ceinte d'un bandeau. R/ Ecus ovales de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, double louis d'or of the ribbon of 1744, Strasbourg mint. Obverse: head to left, hair tied in a ribbon; reverse: oval arms of France and Navarre below a crown. Very fine.)"

This is a common date of the double louis d'or au bandeau, of a type struck 1740-74. We presume that the Strasbourg mint struck large numbers of this denomination to support French army operations in Germany during the War of the Austrian Succession.

Recorded mintage: 29,839[1], a common date.

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers. This specimen 16,17 g.
