Sincona sale 73, lot 1227

This specimen was lot 1227 in Sincona sale 73 (Zürich, November 2021), where it sold for 1,300 CHF (about US$1,673 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE | Kingdom. Louis XV. 1715-1774. 2 Louis d'or au bandeau 1743 BB, Strasbourg. Sehr schön. Leicht justiert. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, double louis d'or au bandeau of 1743, Strasbourg mint. Very fine, Minor adjustment marks.)"

This is a common date of the double louis d'or au bandeau, of a type struck 1740-74. We presume that the Strasbourg mint struck large numbers of this denomination to support French army operations in Germany during the War of the Austrian Succession.

Recorded mintage: 79,716[2].

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-29 mm diameter, designed by J.-C. Röettiers, this specimen 16.13 g.

Catalog reference: Gadoury 346. Fr-463, Dr/4 № 792.
