France 1738-& ecu
This specimen was lot 20424 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1738-&. Aix Mint. Louis XV (1715-74). NGC MS-63. Bright and lustrous, yet struck on a heavily adjusted planchet from significantly aged dies that show evidence of clashing and variance in field texture. Tied with one other example at NGC for the finest graded at either NGC or PCGS." This coin is an écu aux branches d'olivier from the Aix mint. Many Aix mint issues are common as is this one. The type was struck 1726-40 during the reign of Louis XV. This coin was part of the great coinage reform of Cardinal Fleury which finally terminated the manipulations which had disrupted the economy since the 1690's.
