France 1736-W louis d'or
This specimen was lot 99216 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: An Unlisted Overdate for this Already R5-Rated Mint-Date, Louis XV gold Louis d'Or 1736/5-W XF Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, Lille mint. Louis d'Or aux lunettes. An already very impressive mint-date combination in its own right, let alone as an overdate, with the Standard Catalog reporting a mere 4,973 struck in this year. While the 6 over 5 is very easily visible even without magnification, the presence of an additional "tooth" of medal above the final digit may suggest a triple overdate, a rare feature known from some of Louis XV's Ecu's. The sole example we have been able to locate, with the 1736-W recorded as being of the highest rarity." This louis d'or aux lunettes is recorded for 1726-40 and is among the more common gold coins of the French ancien régime altho this is one of many rare dates.
