Jean Elsen sale 134, lot 1710

This specimen was lot 1710 in Jean Elsen sale 134 (Brussels, September 2017), where it sold for €380 (about US$537 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AV louis d'or aux lunettes, 1736K (sur 1735), Bordeaux. D/ B. drapé à g., tête nue. R/ Ecus ovales de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Légères traces d'ajustage. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold louis of the spectacles of 1736, Bordeaux mint. Obverse: draped bust to left; reverse: oval arms of France and Navarre below a crown. Light adjustment marks, very fine.)"

This type is recorded for 1726-40 and is among the more common gold coins of the ancien régime of France.

Recorded mintage: 20,261, a somewhat better date.

Specification: 8.16 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers, this specimen 8,14 g.
