Stack's Bowers September 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74373

This specimen was lot 74373 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/6 Ecu, 1721. Pau Mint. Louis XV. PCGS FINE-15. Lightly toned with significant as-made texture in the fields. From the Sydney F. Martin Collection." This specimen was offered again as lot 74634 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2025), where it sold for $145. This type was struck 1720-23 in large numbers while the adventurer John Law dominated the French government. Nearly all were struck over XX sols de France-Navarre struck in 1719-20. Worth 30 sols (1½ livres) on its introduction, it was reduced in steps to 10 sols 4 deniers in September 1724.

Recorded mintage: connu à deux exemplaires[2], a very rare date.

Specification: 4.07 g, 0.917 fine silver, 24 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
