SB223-73040r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73040 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Ecu, 1659-B. Rouen Mint. Louis XIV. ANACS VF-30 Details--Cleaned. Despite the cleaning, this piece retains good mint brilliance and charming details throughout." The specimen shown is a demi-écu juvénile struck at Rouen during the reign of Louis XIV of France. Droulers[2] devotes catalog numbers 530 thru 557 to describe the numerous variations of this bust, introduced in 1659 when the king was 21 years old. This issue is one of the better dates of the type but even the common dates are priced double a demi-écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: 7,308[2], fairly scarce.

Specification: 13.72 g, 0.917 fine silver, 31-32 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 545, Dr/2 № 320, KM-202.2; Gad-174.
