Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73039

This specimen was lot 73039 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Ecu, 1658-(9). Rennes Mint. Louis XIV. NGC VF-35. Despite some circulation and haymarking, this example retains good details and some brilliance on flan." This is among the last demi-écu à la mèche longue struck in France. The king was twenty years old in 1658 and no longer resembled the child shown on the coin. The demi-écu juvénile was introduced the next year.

Recorded mintage: 901,334[2], fairly common.

Specification: 13.72 g, 0.917 fine silver, 31-32 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin.
