Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73036

This specimen was lot 73036 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Ecu, 1651-F. Angers Mint. Louis XIV. NGC MS-63. A sparkling and wholesome Choice 1/2 Ecu, this lovely and charming example nets a bright silvery hue and strong details throughout. An impressive piece of French numismatics is offered here by this lot." The specimen shown is a demi-écu à la mèche longue (half ecu with the long hair) from the Angers mint. It is one of a series struck 1646-60 from numerous mints and varies from the earlier half écu à la mèche courte by the length of the lock of hair over the king's ear. Its face value at the time of issue was 30 sols tournois. The type is common as is this date. The Angers mint closed in 1661.

Recorded mintage: 122,296[2], fairly common.

Specification: 13.72 g, 0.917 fine silver, 31-32 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin.
