Sincona sale 54, lot 347

This specimen was lot 347 in Sincona sale 54 (Zürich, May 2019), where it sold for 1,800 CHF (about US$2,142 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, konigreich, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. Louis dor à la mèche longue 1651, Arras. Münzzeichen Ratte. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold louis of the long lock of 1651, Arras mint. Very rare, Very fine.)"

This louis d'or à la mèche longue, struck at the Arras mint 1646-56, is among the more available louis of Louis XIV of France. It is still an expensive coin, particularly as this is a rare mint.
