Sincona sale 97, lot 1472

This specimen was lot 1472 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$363 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Königreich, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. 1/2 Ecu à la mèche longue 1651/44 D, Lyon. Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1644 geändert. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. Kleine Kratzer auf Revers. Leicht justiert. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, half écu of the long lock of 1651, Lyon mint, 1651/44 overdate. Very rare, Very Fine, Small scratches on reverse, Minor adjustment marks.)"

Altho the auctioneers are usually accurate, this is actually a demi-écu à la mèche courte, struck at Lyon 1644, 1648-52. Its face value at the time of issue was 30 sols tournois. Altho the demi-écu à la mèche courte is common as a type, this date is scarce.

Specification: 13.72 g, 0.917 fine silver, 32 mm diameter, plain edge, engraved by Jean Warin, this specimen 13.55 g.
