This specimen was lot 22078 in Heritage sale 61352 (Dallas, December 2023), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: François I Ecu d'Or à la croisette ND (1515-1547)-L AU53 NGC, Bayonne mint. A more uncommon Ecu d'Or type with a lovely cross in the center of the reverse." This coin is called the écu d'or au soleil in Duplessy with a face value of fifty sols tournois and is noted with many variations in obverse and reverse legends. On this one, the obverse legend starts at the top by the sunburst. This type was struck after the reform of 1540 instituted letter mintmarks but before coinage was routinely dated. This is a fairly common date, with 32 reported in Sombart's survey[2].

Recorded mintage: 29,037 including a few demi-écus.

Specification: 3.43 g, 0.958 fine gold, plain edge.

Catalog reference: Sb 4878, Fr-351, Dupl-889.
