Sincona sale 83, lot 2740

This specimen was lot 2740 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 950 CHF (about US$1,271 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANKREICH, François I. 1515-1547. Ecu d'or à la croisette o. J. (19.3.1541), Toulouse. Vorzüglich (kingdom of France, Francis I, 1515-47, undated gold écu of the small cross, Toulouse mint. Extremely fine)." This type was struck after the reform of 1540 instituted letter mintmarks but before coinage was routinely dated. Friedberg also mentions a demi-écu d'or à la croisette. This coin had a face value of 45 sols tournois.
