Sincona sale 46, lot 327

This specimen was lot 327 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,320 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, François I. 1515-1547. Ecu dor aux salamandres o. J. (24.4-10.11.1540), La Rochelle. Sehr selten. Schön. (kingdom of France, Francis I, 1515-47, undated écu d'or of the salamanders, emission of April-November 1540, La Rochelle mint. Very rare, Fine.)"

This rare and obscure type was also struck at Toulouse (Dupl-884).

Recorded mintage: est. 16,000.
