This specimen was lot 1667 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €700 (about US$904 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖNIGREICH François I, 1515-1547. Teston o. J. (1540-1547), 23. Typ, A, Paris. Sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Francis I, 1515-47, undated teston of about 1540-47, Paris mint, very fine.)"

Numismatists divide the coinage of Francis I into two periods, separated by the introduction of modern mintmarks in 1540. Duplessy lists 28 types of silver testons from this reign, of which types 19 thru 28 were minted with mintmarks. None are dated. This one, catalogued as type 23, is noted for the Paris (mintmark "A"), Angers (mintmark "F") and La Rochelle (mintmark "H") mints.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9.59 g, 0.899 fine silver.
