Finland 1865 penni

from the Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70531

This specimen was lot 70531 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $180. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FINLAND. Penni, 1865. Alexander II. NGC MS-64 Brown. This attractive little near-Gem example boast a strong strike displaying lovely rich brown patina." This type is listed for 1864-71 and is cheap in circulated condition. Later types are noted for 1872-76, 1881-84 and 1888-1900. Russian defeats in World War One enabled the Finns, who had long chafed under Russian rule, to declare independence.

Recorded mintage: 515,000, a better date.
