Finland 1864 penni
This specimen was lot 1772 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €3,600 (about US$5,098 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"EUROPÄISCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · RUSSLAND, KAISERREICH Alexander II., 1855-1881. Ku.-Penni 1864, Helsinki, für Finnland. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (grand duchy of Finland, Alexander II, 1855-81, copper penny of 1864, Helsinki mint. Very rare in this quality, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This the only rare date of a type struck 1864-71. Later types are noted for 1872-76, 1881-84 and 1888-1900. Russian defeats in World War One enabled the Finns, who had long chafed under Russian rule, to declare independence.
