Finland 1865-S 25 pennia
This specimen was lot 22481 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "FINLAND. 25 Pennia, 1865-S. Helsinki Mint. Alexander II. PCGS MS-63 Prooflike Gold Shield. Entirely white with stunning flash created by the mirror-like fields. RARE quality for the issue with an accompanying valuation in the Standard Catalog of World Coins of $350 in MS-60 condition." This type is listed for 1865-71 and was struck for Finland by the czarist administration. It is priced substantially higher than the later type (KM 6.2, with dentilated border) of 1872-1917. Russian defeats in World War One enabled the Finns, who had long chafed under Russian rule, to declare independence.
