Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 26430

This specimen was lot 26430 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, ND (1583-85). London Mint; mm: A. Elizabeth I. PCGS VF-30. Obverse: Crowned and mantled bust left; Reverse: Coat-of-arms over long cross fourchee. An overall wholesome and charming example of the type from the middle years in the reign of the 'Virgin Queen.'" This type was part of the sixth issue[2] of 1582-1600 and was the first shilling minted since 1560-61. We don't know why the sixpences were dated but the shillings were not.
