This specimen was lot 20270 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Angel, ND (1578-79). London Mint; im: Greek Cross. Elizabeth I. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, EF Details Gold Shield. Fifth issue. Obverse: Archangel Michael slaying dragon to right; Reverse: Ship bearing coat-of-arms and cross; E to left, rose to right. Despite its minor cleaning, this attractive example offers a popular design and a detailed strike, with the dragon almost appearing as a bear in its facial features. Emanating from the middle period of the "Virgin Queen," this specimen is sure to delight and generate great interest." This angel was tariffed at six shillings and eight pence (one third of a pound). It was part of the fifth issue.
