England (1574-78) 1/2 angel Fr-201
This specimen was lot 20095 in Ponterio sale 176 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $5,875. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Elizabeth I, 1558-1603. Half Angel, ND (1574-78). Eglantine. St. Michael spearing dragon. Beaded inner circle. Rv. Ship with shield at center. Nearly as made, if not fully so, with a superb strike and excellent details. It is very difficult to see the ‘TO’ that was engraved as an antique collector’s mark. Very Fine Plus. Ex: Spink, 1985." This half angel was tariffed at three shillings and four pence (one sixth of a pound). This type and the fifth issue half angel (Fr-212) are the most available gold coins of the reign.
