England (1526-33) crown Fr-164
This specimen was lot 24063 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $3,818.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Henry VIII (1509-47) gold Crown of the Double Rose ND, 2nd Coinage of 1526-44, Lis mm, 'H K' beside rose on obverse for Henry and Katherine of Aragon, his first wife (1526-33), 'H R' by reverse shield, AU58 NGC, lustrous and well struck, round flan, beautiful reddish gold toning. Poor Katherine, she soon perished!" Angels and half angels continued to be struck into the reign of Henry VIII but were raised in value in 1526, the half angel going from three shillings sixpence to three shilling nine pence. The gold crown (five shillings) and half crown (two shillings sixpence) were introduced but were found to be more practical when struck in silver. It only took a century for the English government to figure this out during the reign of Charles II.
