England (1526-33) crown Fr-163
This specimen was lot 20438 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $5,875. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Crown of the Rose, ND (ca. 1526-44). Henry VIII (1509-47). PCGS AU-58 Secure Holder. Second coinage, 1526-1544 while Henry was married to his first wife, Katherine of Aragon. Rose mintmark (Tower mint). Bold strike on a nice round flan displaying full legends on both sides. Lightly toned with soft satin luster and quite attractive." Angels and half angels continued to be struck into the reign of Henry VIII but were raised in value in 1526, the half angel going from three shillings sixpence to three shilling nine pence. The gold crown (five shillings) and half crown (two shillings sixpence) were introduced but were found to be more practical when struck in silver. While the second coinage is traditionally dated 1526-44, we can't imagine Henry putting Katherine's initial on any coin issued after 1533, when he had determined to divorce her.
