Künker sale 293, lot 2134
Elbing in 1648, at the mouth of the Vistula R.

This specimen was lot 2134 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,617 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"POLEN, ELBING, Stadt. 18-Gröscher (Ort, 1/4 Reichstaler) 1662, mit Titel Johann Kasimirs (1649-1668). R Sehr schön. (Poland, city of Elbing, 18 groszy or quarter thaler of 1662, struck in the name of John Casimir, 1649-68. Scarce, very fine.)"

This denomination, struck at Elbing in various styles 1656-57 and 1661-67, seems to be unique to Poland. The SCWC notes that it traded for a quarter thaler but may only have been a fifth.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dutkowski/Suchanek 292 (R3); Kopicki 7128 (R3), KM-85.
