The specimen shown is from a series of debased reales struck in 1833-35 while El Salvador was part of the Central American Republic. All provisional reales of this type are very rare. It was lot 9119 in Ponterio sale 151 (Baltimore, November 2009), where it sold for $1,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "EL SALVADOR. Provisional Coinage. Real, 1833. Obverse: ESTADO DE SALVADOR Reverse: MONEDA PROVISIONAL . IND * . 1833 RARE date. Overall well struck with flatness at the base of the pillar.. Toned VERY FINE." The second specimen is a much more typical example of the type.
