This type was struck at the Royal Mint as part of a series to honor famous Ecuadoreans. This one features Jaime Roldos (1940-81), who was President of Ecuador from 10 August 1979 until his death on 24 May 1981. Five, ten, twenty-five and fifty centavos were issued using the modules of United States coins altho in stainless steel instead of copper-nickel. As Ecuador is dollarized, they are likely intended to be convertible to the dollar and not the old sucre.
