Ecuador 1843-MV 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 21112 in Heritage sale 3008 (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $10,350. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 8 Escudos 1843-MV-S, AU58 NGC, superb rose-gold and harvest orange patina with meticulously sharp design features, an incredible example of this classic Latin gold rarity. There is a tiny natural flan flaw on the cheek, mentioned for absolute accuracy only. Very rare in this superior quality." This type was struck 1841-43 and superseded a similar design (KM 23.1) issued 1838-41. Like all predecimal Ecuadorian gold coins, it is rare. One, two and four escudo pieces also exist.
