Durango 1914 centavo KM-626b
This specimen was lot 73461 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $140. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Durango. Centavo, 1914. PCGS VF-25. Struck in lead. Moderately worn but free of the damage often seen on this type due to the softness of its lead composition. Even matte black surfaces with fully legible details ensure this is a charming example for the type." The state of Durango was a center of activity for the Villistas in 1914. Local coinage was struck in many forms and metals; this centavo was struck in lead, copper, brass and aluminum. The copper version is common, the lead version scarce and the brass version rare. The aluminum version (KM 628) used a different design and was probably made in the United States under contract.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: lead, 20 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-626b; GB-106.
