Donauworth 1543 thaler Dav-9170
This specimen was lot 676 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 1,225 CHF (about US$1,507 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Donauwörth, Stadt Taler 1543. Titel Karl V. Gekrönter Doppeladler mit Schild auf Brust. Rv. Gekröntes, geharnischtes Hüftbild rechts mit Zepter und Schwertknauf. Dunkle Tönung. Gutes sehr schön. (City of Donauworth, thaler of 1543, in the name of Charles V. Obverse: crowned double headed eagle bears shield on breast; reverse: crowned, armored half-length bust to right bearing scepter and head of a sword. Dark toned, good very fine.)"
Donauworth, now part of Bavaria, was formerly an imperial free city on the Danube. This thaler of 1543-48 is the only such from this locale.
