Luneburg 1546 thaler Dav-9418
This specimen was lot 744 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 950 CHF (about US$1,169 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Lüneburg, Stadt Taler 1546. Mzm. Hermann Gante. Dreitürmige Stadtburg mit Löwenschild im Tor. Rv. Zunehmender Mond mit menschlichem Gesicht. Kl. Randriss. Dunkle Patina. Gutes sehr schön. (City of Luneburg, thaler of 1546, mintmaster Hermann Gante. Obverse: City walls with three towers, city arms on gate; reverse: man in the moon. Small planchet crack, dark toned, good very fine.)"
This thaler was not issued by the duke of Brunswick-Luneburg but by the city in its own name. It was also issued 1547-48.
