Künker sale 293, lot 966
Leuchtenberg in 1777, as part of Bavaria just south of Sulzbach

This specimen was lot 966 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$2,965 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LEUCHTENBERG, LANDGRAFSCHAFT, Georg III. 1531-1555. 1/2 Taler 1547, Pfreimd, mit Titel Karls V. Von großer Seltenheit. Attraktives, sehr schönes Exemplar. (Germany, landgraviate of Leuchtenberg, George III, 1531-55, half thaler of 1547, Pfreimd mint, struck in the name of Charles V. Very rare, attractive very fine example.)"

The landgrave of Leuchtenberg was a considerable power in the Upper Palatinate in the Middle Ages but never succeeded in becoming a direct suffragan of the emperor. When the dynasty lapsed in the early 1600's, the landgraviate was annexed to Bavaria, where it remains to this day. This type is listed for 1545, 1547 and 1548.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.83-14.83 g, silver, 34-36 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM MB33, Friedl 109 b.
