Künker sale 386, lot 5301
Leuchtenberg in 1777, as part of Bavaria just south of Sulzbach

This specimen was lot 5301 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €2,100 (about US$2,714 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LEUCHTENBERG, LANDGRAFSCHAFT, Georg III. 1531-1555. Taler 1548, Pfreimd, mit Titel Karls V. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Ungewöhnlich scharf ausgeprägtes Exemplar, vorzüglich +. (landgraviate of Leuchtenberg, George III, 1531-55, thaler of 1548, Pfreimd mint, struck in the name of Charles V. Very scarce in this quality, unusually wel struck, choice extremely fine.)"

The landgrave of Leuchtenberg was a considerable power in the Upper Palatinate in the Middle Ages but never succeeded in becoming a direct suffragan of the emperor. When the dynasty lapsed in the early 1600's, the landgraviate was annexed to Bavaria, where it remains to this day. This type was struck 1543-48, during Georg's brief foray into coinage.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.01-28.90 g, silver, this specimen 28,81 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB31, Friedl 120 b; Dav-9370.
