The landgrave of Leuchtenberg was a considerable power in the Upper Palatinate in the Middle Ages but never succeeded in becoming a direct suffragan of the emperor. When the dynasty lapsed in 1646, the landgraviate was annexed to Bavaria, where it remains to this day. Georg III issued a series of thalers (Dav-9367 thru Dav-9372) during 1541-53. All are scarce. This is the only double thaler from this state. It was also struck in 1543.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 57.76-57.79 g, silver, 41-42 mm diameter; this specimen 60,10 g.
