Sincona Auction 103, lot 119

This specimen was lot 119 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$305 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DÄNEMARK, Frederik III. 1648-1670. Krone (4 Mark) 1667, Kopenhagen. Münzmeister Gotfred Krüger. Umschriften beidseitig im Uhrzeigersinn. Selten. Sehr schön. Kleine Schrötlingsfehler. Gotfred Krüger war von 1664 bis 1680 Münzmeister für Friedrich III. und Christian V. Wie Friedrich Caspar Herbach wurde auch Gotfred Krüger in einen Betrugsfall verwickelt, da er minderwertigere Münzen geprägt hatte. (kingdom of Denmark, Frederick III, 1648-70, krone or four mark of 1667, Copenhagen mint. Inscriptions on both sides run clockwise. Rare, Very Fine, Minor flan flaws. Gotfred Krüger served as Master of the Mint for Frederick III and Christian V from 1664 to 1680. Like Friedrich Caspar Herbach, Gotfred Krüger also became embroiled in a fraud scandal, as he had minted coins of inferior quality.)"

This type is noted for 1666-70. It is one of several kroner (KM 273.2, KM 274/Dav-3581, KM 285/Dav-3581B and KM 276/Dav-3582 (shown here)) issued that year. None are common. A krone was four mark or two-thirds speciedaler.

Specification: 22.27 g, 0.671 fine silver, 42 mm diameter, this specimen is 21.72 g.
