Denmark 1648 1/12 specie daler
This specimen was lot 70476 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. 1/12 Specie Daler Klippe, 1648. Frederik III. NGC FINE-12. Largesse coinage. This wholly original looking example displays even wear with rich attractive cabinet patina. Largesse coinage is similar to that of British Maundy money in that it was given out during coronations, but also during royal funerals." While flinging largesse to the crowd was a common practice of many monarchs, only in Scandinavia were special coins struck for the purpose. This one was issued on the death of Christian IV and the accession of Frederik III. It was accompanied by one-sixth and one quarter speciedaler in silver and half, one and double ducats in gold. All are scarce but this one is the most available.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.881 fine silver.
