Denmark 1648 2 ducats Fr-38
This specimen was lot 33137 in Heritage sale 3135 (Pittsburgh, September 2026), where it sold for $39,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "Denmark: Resplendent Double Ducat. Christian IV gold 2 Ducat 1648 AU58 NGC, Copenhagen mint, Mintmaster: Heinrich Köhler. A fabulous Hebrew Tetragrammaton Double Ducat type, so seldom appearing on the market, especially in a state of preservation that borders on Mint State. Struck the same year as the Peace of Westphalia, the rich visual texture of the coin reflects the significance of the period. Ex. L. E. Bruun Collection (Stack's Bowers, March 2025, Lot 13249); Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private sale, 1922); Peter v. Hemmert Collection (1807, Lot 51)." This type was struck at Copenhagen 1644-48 with an axe mintmark, along with quarter, half and single ducats. The reverse inscription, JUSTUS / Jehovah / JUDEX ("the Lord is a righteous judge") in partly Hebrew letters, which the Danish king used to protest against the breach of peace and the invasion of the Swedes. Denmark lost the Torstenson War and had to cede Jämtland, Härjedalen, Idre, Särna, the Baltic Sea islands of Gotland and Ösel, and the province of Halland to Sweden.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
