Elbing, Danzig and Thorn in the sixteenth century

This specimen was lot 31312 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $822.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Danzig. August III 18 Groszy (Ort) 1759-CHS MS62 NGC, Danzig mint. Obv. Crowned bust of August III right. Rev. Lions supporting arms of Danzig, with value (18) above and date (1759) below. Lustrous, with light rubbing on the obverse, and reverse, high points." Elector Frederick August of Saxony was also king of Poland and issues for the two regions bear a strong resemblance. This type is recorded in various subtypes for 1758-60.
