Danzig 1760-REOE 18 groszy KM-105
This specimen was lot 1156 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND: DANZIG: Augustus III, 1734-1763, AR ¼ thaler, 1760, 18 groschen = ort = 1/4 thaler, on the reverse palm branches and denomination numbers separated by a pin and a fleur-de-lis, palm stems narrowly spaced, VF, ex Dr. Robert A. Rosenfeld Collection." Elector Frederick August of Saxony was also king of Poland and issues for the two regions bear a strong resemblance. This thirty groszy or gulden was struck in Danzig, then a semi-independent city on the shores of the Baltic. Augustus III was the third Saxon to be king of Poland but left Polish affairs to his viceroy while he patronized opera in Dresden. On his death in 1763, his son succeeded to the electorate but the Russians installed Stanisław August Poniatowski as king of Poland, to the gain of Saxony, which was now severed from the anarchy in Poland. This type is recorded in various subtypes for 1758-60. A klippe (KM 114) exists for 1760.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.1 g, silver.
Catalog reference: Kopicki-7769, KM-105.
