D W Indies SB118-22441r.jpg

This type was struck for the Danish West Indies (now the U. S. Virgin Islands) in 1878-79. The 1879 has a higher mintage but is priced double the 1878; both are expensive choice. In 1917, Denmark sold its share of the West Indies to the United States. The second specimen was lot 22441 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "DANISH WEST INDIES. 10 Cents, 1879. NGC MS-63. Sharply struck, brilliant and attractive."

Recorded mintage: 80,000.

Specification: 3.48 g, 0.625 fine silver, .070 troy oz ASW, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM 70; Sieg-22; H-26.
