This type was struck for the Danish West Indies (now the U. S. Virgin Islands) in 1868, 1878-79 and 1883. The 1868 is the most common date. In 1917, Denmark sold its share of the West Indies to the United States. This specimen was lot 22439 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $90. The catalog description[1] noted, "DANISH WEST INDIES. Cent, 1868. NGC MS-63 RB. Lovely cartwheel effect. Mostly red with a few dark spots leading to the Red Brown designation. An attractive example."

Recorded mintage: 240,000.
