Danish West Indies 1879 5 cents
This specimen was lot 73510 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "DANISH WEST INDIES. 5 Cents, 1879. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IX. PCGS MS-64. Brilliant in the fields with a satisfying satiny sheen across the portrait, this well produced little minor is fittingly tied with just one other as the finest handled by PCGS." This type was struck for the Danish West Indies (now the U. S. Virgin Islands) in 1878-79, along with a ten and twenty cents. In 1917, Denmark sold its share of the West Indies to the United States.
